Originating from a team of dedicated walkers in the annual Walk the Walk for Autism event in 2010, the Strait Area Autism Group was created. Beginning as a small support group, the Strait Area Autism Group soon grew to organize activities and events in Port Hawkesbury, as well as a new location for Walk the Walk for Autism in June 2011. Through their ongoing community support and fundraising efforts through Walk the Walk, the Strait Area Autism Group has offered recreational opportunities such as field trips, swimming, and fitness classes, as well as organized parties for kids and iPad programs in schools. In 2013 the Strait Area Autism Group partnered with the Special Olympics and Inverness Richmond Early Childhood Intervention program to create opportunities and expand their reach in the community. In 2014 the Strait Area Autism Group became a Chapter of Autism Nova Scotia and is currently working toward programs such as March Break day camps, Summer Camps for children and young adults, as well as more day trips and outing opportunities.
